Pippa Smart
Pippa Smart is a research
communication and publishing consultant,
working for her own company, PSP
Consulting (www.pspconsulting.org).
She has worked in academic and research publishing for almost 25
years and has a wealth
of knowledge about the industry.
Pippa graduated from Oxford
Brookes University with a degree in publishing and then worked for
several UK academic and research publishers including Cambridge
University Press, Blackwell Science and CABI. She held a variety
of roles within these companies including production, technical
development, editorial and strategic management. Latterly she held
the position of Head of Publishing with a
development agency (INASP),
working with developing world journal publishers (particularly
Africa and SE Asia) to manage publishing programmes and migrate to
online publication.
She has extensive experience of
the industry, and currently uses this to advise publishers in
development of their publishing programmes (including the Food and
Agriculture Agency of the UN in Italy, and the
Bloomsbury Qatar Foundation
Journals publishing company). She runs a series of training programmes independently and in conjunction with other
organisations (such as the European Association of Science
Editors (EASE), on topics such as
editorial skills, journal business development and copyright). She
has developed training and policy documents for a variety of organisations (e.g. on rights management
for the World Intellectual
Property Organization, and on e-book publishing for Higher
Education Press in China). She also works closely with the
Association of Learned, Professional and Society Publishers (ALPSP),
developing training courses for their members and writing their
monthly newsletter on the publishing industry, which is read by
over 1000 publishers around the world.
